We want everyone to be aware of the environmental problems our oceans are suffering day by day. The SSI Blue Oceans movement supports the conservation and sustainable use of aquatic environments, including oceans, seas, coasts, and waterways and their magnificent diversity of plant and animal species.

Dealing with the underwater world

When swimming or snorkeling near a reef, it’s essential to practice care and respect for the environment. Only use a swim-through if you can pass through without making contact with anything. Always maintain a safe distance from the reef to avoid touching or damaging it, and never break or disturb corals. Be sure to use designated entrances and exits when entering or leaving the water, and try not to stir up sand, as this can cloud the water and suffocate corals.

It’s important not to hunt, harass, or feed marine animals, and unless you’re properly trained, avoid touching them. Refrain from taking any souvenirs from the sea and ensure that if you use a reef hook, it’s placed in a way that won’t damage the reef or disturb its delicate ecosystem. Lastly, when taking photos, never disrupt animals or their habitat for the sake of a better shot. Respecting these guidelines helps preserve marine life and the natural beauty of the ocean.

Avoid garbage

It’s vital to protect the ocean by never throwing inorganic waste, such as plastics, into the sea, as these materials take an extremely long time to decompose. Opt for reusable items like coffee mugs, lunch boxes, glass or metal bottles, and shopping bags to reduce waste. Avoid bringing unnecessary packaging to resorts, and always dispose of waste in the most environmentally friendly way possible. If you smoke, ensure cigarette butts are discarded in appropriate bins, rather than on the ground or in the water. These small actions contribute significantly to preserving the environment.

Environmental awareness

Make a personal commitment to protect the environment and actively encourage others to do the same through positive actions and motivation. Support meaningful projects and organizations that focus on marine conservation. If you can, collect garbage during your dives, but only if it won’t cause further harm to the environment. When possible, cut away hanging ropes and gather floating nets or plastics. If you’re unable to remove a net, inform your dive buddy or the crew at the surface immediately. Avoid consuming products such as shark fins, whale meat, or turtle eggs, and promptly report any violations involving the use of marine animals as souvenirs. Your efforts can make a significant impact on marine protection.

Responsible use of resources

Be conscious of water consumption, particularly in regions where water storage and purification capabilities are limited. Keep your showers brief, using only as much time as necessary to get clean. Similarly, when washing your dive equipment, use the provided containers and do so only when essential—usually, a thorough cleaning at the end of your dive trip will suffice to maintain your gear.

Conserving energy is equally important, so remember to turn off lights when they are not needed. Embrace alternative modes of transportation, such as walking or cycling, whenever feasible, to reduce your carbon footprint and lessen environmental strain.

Reducing waste is another critical practice. Creating meal plans and shopping lists allows you to shop efficiently, preventing the purchase of excess food that could go to waste. These small steps not only save you money but also help ensure that resources are used wisely and with minimal impact on the environment.
